Point Reyes Fire Update

From Erik Gordon Bainbridge: For people who come to our Kule Loklo solstice and equinox gatherings.

I’ve attached a map showing the current fire location, and I’ve added text to the map showing where Kule Loklo and the Visitor center are so you can get a better idea of where the fire is.  You can see on the map that the fire is now spreading mostly north and northeast.  Firefighters are hoping to keep the fire contained in the area bounded by the ocean, Limantour Rd, Bear Valley Rd, and Bear Valley Trail.

I watched the Marin Country Fire Department press conference this morning.  The fire is now up to 2,259 acres and is 5% contained.  Today’s the first day there’s been any containment at all.  Here in Fairfax we’ve had occasionally ferocious winds.  I assume it’s even worse on the coast.  Currently, there are 196 personnel involved in fighting the fire with 20 engines, 3 helicopters, and 2 dozers.  We may be getting more dry thunderstorms in the next 24-48 hours, which increases both of more lightning strikes and of stronger winds.

The entire Point Reyes National Seashore and the Golden Gate National Recreation Area along the Bolinas Ridge from Olema down almost to the Bolinas Wye are closed.  Don’t drive any roads in the area unless you have to.  They are trying to keep the roads clear for emergency vehicles and for evacuations, should they become necessary.  One problem for both Inverness area and Bolinas residents is that their only exit routes are through areas that could be burning.

There will be a community meeting at 5pm tonight, Saturday, August 22nd on both Zoom and the Marin County Fire Department Facebook page, which is https://www.facebook.com/marincountyfire
